2003: Due a conflict with the major league schedule, the annual Hall of Fame Game which has
been held the day after induction ceremonies will take place on different weekends for the
first time in the Hall's history. The game between the Phillies and Tampa Bay Devil Rays will
take place on June 16 and with the Hall of Fame induction taking place on July 27th.

1992: The Phillies acquired Darren Chapman from the Yankees for Charlie Hayes.

1979: The Phillies drafted Mark Davis in the 1st round (1st pick) of the 1979

Horace Fogel, William H. Locke and his cousin William F. Baker buy the club.
January 12th:
1981: The Phillies drafted Rick Surhoff in the 20th round of the 1982 amateur draft.
1988: Former Phillies ace Jim Bunning falls four votes shy of the 321 needed for
election in his 13th year on the ballot. Bunning would be elected in 1996.
1994: Steve Carlton, winner of 329 games and four Cy Young Awards, is elected
to the Hall of Fame.
January 13th
1959: State Senator Joseph W. Cowgill introduces a bill to build a stadium in
Camden to induce the nearby Phillies to move to New Jersey. This effort is based
on statements by Phillies owner Bob Carpenter that he is thinking of moving the
team unless he gets a new stadium.
1959: John Quinn resigns as GM of the Braves and immediately accepts a
similar post with the Phillies. The Pirates trade P Murry Dickson to the Phils for
P Andy Hansen and IF Jack "Lucky" Lohrke.
1978: Released Dave Wallace.
January 14th
Birth dates for former Phillies Ken Johnson (1923) and Ron Clark (1943).
January 15
1958: In a deal worth over a million dollars, the Yankees announce that they will
televise 140 games in the 1958 season. Six days later, the Phillies agree to
televise 78 games into the New York City area.
1915: William H. Locke acquires the Phillies and is named club president.
January 16th
1970: Curt Flood, Cardinals Gold Glove outfielder, files a civil lawsuit
challenging ML baseball's reserve clause, a suit that will have historic
implications. Flood refused to report to the Phillies after he was traded by the
Cardinals 3 months ago, contending the baseball rule violates federal antitrust
laws.
January 17th
1995: The Phillies signed Gregg Jefferies as a free agent.
January 18th
1938: Former Phillies Pitcher Grover Alexander is elected to the Baseball Hall
of Fame, the only player to get the required 75 percent of the BBWAA votes.
Alexander pitched for the Phillies from 1911-17, and again in 1930.
January 19th
1937: Former Phillie Nap Lajoie is voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame by the
BBWAA. Lajoie played for the Phillies from 1896 to 1900. He is enshrined with
Tris Speaker, and Cy Young.
January 20th
1989: The Phillies purchase SS Dickie Thon purchased from the Padres.
1984: Free agent Pete Rose signs a one-year contract with the Expos. The Phillies
chose not to sign Rose after the 1993 season.
1969: The Phillies traded C Clay Dalrymple to the Orioles for OF Ron Stone.
1993: Signed Jim Eisenreich as a free agent.
January 21st
1919: 3B Milt Stock, C Pickles Dillhoeffer, and P Frank Davis are traded to St.
Louis for INFs Doug Baird and Stuffy Stewart, P Eugene Packard, and cash.
2007: Chase Utley (2B) Signed ( 2007-2013)(seven-year extension, avoids arbitration).
January 22nd
2013: The Phillies sign Of Delmon Young to a one year contract as a free agent.
1976: Phillies pitcher Pitchers Robin Roberts is are voted into the Hall of Fame.
Roberts led the NL in starts and innings for five straight seasons and was tops in
victories for four consecutive years on his way to 286 career wins.
1921: The Phillies trade Eppa Rixey to the Reds for RHP Jimmy Ring
and OF Earl "Greasy" Neale, who later coached the Eagles to two NFL titles
and earned a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Rixey would pitch his way
into the Hall of Fame over the next 13 years.

1983: The Phillies resigned IF Bill Robinson as a free-agent. Robinson was also a
player for the Phillies in 1972-74, and in 1982. He would go on to be a coach for
the Phillies at Reading in 1994-1995 and manager in 1996, and the hitting coach
at S/WB from 1997-98.
January 29th
2021: The Phillies signed catcher J.T. Realmuto to a five year contract extension.
1996: The Phils traded P Heathcliffe Slocumb and Larry Wimberly, and OF Rick
Holifield to the Red Sox for OF Lee Tinsley and Glenn Murray and P Ken Ryan.
1961: Former Phillie Billy Hamilton (1890-95) is voted into the Baseball Hall of
Fame by the Special Veterans Committee. Hamilton is the Phillies all-time leader
in batting average (.362).
1948: Commissioner Happy Chandler fines the Phillies $500 for signing high
school players. The Yankees and Cubs are also fined.
1996: Traded Heathcliff Slocumb, Larry Wimberly (minors), and Rick Holyfield (minors)
to the Boston Red Sox. Received Glenn Murray, Ken Ryan, and Lee Tinsley.
January 30th
1948: Herb Pennock, general manager of the Phillies and former star southpaw,
collapses in a New York hotel lobby and dies a short time later at a local hospital.
1919: The Reds hire former Phillies skipper Pat Moran as manager when no word
is received about the managing job from Reds manager Christy Mathewson, who
is still in France.
January 31st
1983: The Phillies sign veteran 1B Tony Perez to a one-year contract.
1952: The Phillies settle their damage suit with former P Art Lopatka out of
court. He contends that the Phils made him pitch with a fractured index finger,
resulting in damage to his arm. He further contends that when he was no longer
of use, the Phillies released him as damaged "goods" in 1947.
February 1st
Birthdates for former Phillies Elmer Burkhart (1917), and Bob Conley (1934).
February 2nd
1989: Former Phillies 1B Bill White, a 6-time All-Star, is elected president of the
National League. He becomes the highest-ranking black official in American
professional sports. White played for the Phillies from 1966-68, batting .276,
.250, and .239.
February 3rd
1928: The NL appoints 2 former players as umpires: former Phillies OF Sherry
Magee and SS Albert "Dolly" Stark. It is a type of vindication for Magee, who
was suspended for hitting an umpire in 1911.

1985: The Phillies trade 1B Al Oliver to the Dodgers for P Pat Zachary.
1977: The Phillies sign IF Davey Johnson as a free-agent.
February 5th
1946: The Phillies purchase P Al Jurisisc and OF Johnny Wyrostek from St. Louis.

1986: Free-agent P Al Holland, who saved just 5 games last season, and was not
re-signed by the Phillies, signs with the Yankees.

2019: The Phillies acquired catcher J.T. Realmuto from The Miami Marlins for Jorge

1948: OF Johnny Wyrostek traded to the Reds for INF Eddie Miller.
February 8th
1916: The NL votes down a proposal by Charlie Ebbets of Brooklyn to limit the
number of 25-cent seats clubs can sell to 2,000. The Phillies have 6,500 25-cent
seats available.
1901: News leaks out that Napoleon Lajoie, the Phillies star 2B and leading NL
hitter, has jumped to the new Philadelphia AL club, along with pitchers Chick
Fraser and Bill Bernhard.
February 9th:
1943: The NL is looking for a buyer for the Phillies, whose owner, Gerry
Nugent, has fallen in arrears on rent and bank loans. The league pays $10 a
share for 4,685 out of 5,000 outstanding shares in club.

1955: OF Peanuts Lowery signed as a free agent.
1945:The Phils signed 1B Jimmie Foxx as a free-agent.
1938: The Phillies sign free agent Bill Hallahan.

1979: Phillies P Larry Christenson falls during a charity bicycle caravan,
fracturing his collarbone.

Birth date for former Phillies Jim Fogerty (1864) and Kiddo Davis (1902).

2019. The Phillies signed RHP Aaron Nola to a 4 year extension worth $45 million.
1953: Shibe Park is renamed Connie Mack Stadium, in honor of longtime A's

was a member of the 1950 Whiz Kids. Torgeson would play for the Phillies from
1953-1955.

1943: The NL finds a buyer for the Phillies. He is William D. Cox, a New York
lumberman.

1934: George Lee Anderson is born in Bridgewater, South Dakota. He will
earn the nickname 'Sparky', bat .218 in 152 games for the Phillies in 1959,
and never play another major league game. He will, however, win 2,194 games
and capture World Championships in both the NL and AL as manager of the
Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers.

1979: The Phillies get 2b Manny Trillo, OF Greg Gross, and C Doug Rader from
the Cubs for 2b Ted Sizemore, Of Jerry Martin, C Barry Foote, P Derek Botelho,
and P Henry Mack.

1972: The Phillies acquire P Steve Carlton from the Cardinals for P Rick Wise.
Carlton would pitch for the Phillies from 1972 to 1986, winning 241 games,
three Cy Young awards, and amassing 4,136 strikeouts.

led. Harris would manage the Phillies for only one season. The Phils would go

1996: Former Phillies pitcher Jim Bunning, who won 100 games and pitched

Committee. Bunning pitched for the Phils from 1964-67, and again in 1970-71.
On June 21, 1964, he pitched a perfect game, beating the Mets 6-0 in New York.
1958: Phillies pitching coach Johnny Podres suffers minor injuries as he and
fellow teammates Duke Snider and Don Zimmer are involved in an auto accident
as they try to beat a 12:30 a.m. curfew.

1995: The Phillies signed 3B Charlie Hayes as a free agent.
1991: The Philllies signed Dave LaPoint as a free agent.
1938: The Phillies sell slugging 1B Dolph Camilli to Brooklyn for $45,000.
1907: The first suit for damages resulting from the Phillies' 1903 ballpark
disaster ends with the acquittal of club owners A. J. Reach and John Rogers.

1924: At the age of forty-eight, former Phillies manager Pat Moran dies
of Bright's disease at the Reds spring training site. Moran guided the
Phillies to the 1915 NL Pennant.
1903: The Phillies get second baseman Kid Gleason from the Giants. The
Giants got Gleason from the Tigers for last season's part-time manager
Heine Smith. Gleason previously played for the Phillies from 1888-91.
He would remain with the Phillies through 1908.

1941: Phils P Hugh Mulcahy is the first ML player drafted into military
service in W W II.

1994: Phillies first baseman/outfielder John Kruk is diagnosed with testicular
cancer; after surgery, doctors expect a full recovery.
1943: The Dodgers trade first baseman Babe Dahlgren to the Phillies for
outfielder Lloyd Waner and infielder Al Glossop.

1962: The Phillies leave the Jack Tar hotel in Florida because it refuses
to provide service to black players. The team moves to the Rocky Point,

1992: The Phillies acquire RHP Curt Schilling from Houston for RHP Jason Grimsley.
Schilling would go on to become the LCS MVP in 1993, and strike out more than
300 batters in two consecutive seasons.
April 3rd
1966: The Phillies participate in a special draft held for Southern Cal P Tom
Seaver. The Braves initially drafted Seaver, but after USC had begun its baseball
schedule. The violation netted Richmond (an Atlant affiliate) a $500 fine and
forbade Atlanta from signing Seaver for 3 years. However, Seaver was also declared
ineligible at the college level, so the unprecedented special draft is held. Three
clubs willing to match Richmond's $40,000 contract, the Indians, Phillies, and
Mets participate. New York's name is drawn from a hat as the winner.
April 4th
1995: The Phillies sign C Lenny Webster as a free agent.

1975: The Phillies trade OF Bill Robinson to the Pirates for P Wayne Simpson.
1971: The Phillies traded Pat Skrable to Milwaukee for RHP Wayne Twitchell.

1913: With league approval, the Dodgers play the first regular-season game at
Ebbets Field a day ahead of the rest of the league. Their opponents were the
Phillies. Cold weather keeps the Opening Day crowd down to about 12,000 as the
Phils' Tom Seaton beats Nap Rucker 1-0.
April 10th
1971: The Phillies debut in new $49.5 million Veterans Stadium by beating
Montreal 4-1. Don Money connects for the park's first home run.
Aptil 11th
1961: Robin Roberts ties Grover Cleveland Alexander's NL record with a 12th
straight Opening Day start, but the Phillies lose 6-2 to Don Drysdale and the
Dodgers.
1907: On a cold day in New York, the Giants open against the Phillies before
16,000. A late snowstorm has been cleared, but there are large piles of snow
surrounding the field. Frank Corridon is in the 8th inning of a shutout for the
Giants when fans, who have been pelting the players with snowballs, begin jumping
from the stands and running around the outfield. There are no police on duty at
the park, so umpire Bill Klem forfeits the game 9-0 to the Phillies.
April 12th
1989: Former Phillies manager Terry Francona singles in the 7th inning for the
Brewers to break up Nolan Ryans bid for a no hitter.
1965 - Richie Allen hit the first home run in the Houston Astrodome, off Bob Bruce,
as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Astros 2-0.
1909: Philadelphia's Shibe Park, the first steel-and-concrete structure built for
baseball, is dedicated as a record crowd of 31,160 sees 18-year-old John "Stuffy"
McInnis make his major-league debut at shortstop. Eddie Plank pitches the A's to
an 8-1 win over Boston. The Phillies began play In Shibe Park in 1938. It was
renamed Connie Mack Stadium in 1953.

1902: The Pennsylvania Supreme Court, reversing a lower court's decision,
grants a permanent injunction (effective only in Pennsylvania) barring jumpers
Nap Lajoie, Chick Fraser, and Bill Bernhard from playing for the A's, or any
team but the Phillies.
1898: Phillies P Bill Duggleby hits a grand slam in his first ML at bat
against the Giants. Dugglebury played for the Philies in 1898 and again from

1971: The Phillies trade OF Johnny Briggs to the Brewers for P Ray Peters and
C/INF/OF Peter Koegel.
1957: John Irwin Kennedy becomes the first African-American to play for the Phillies,
making them the last NL team to integrate. Kennedy pinch runs for Solly Hemus
in the 5-1 loss to Brooklyn. He will play only briefly in five games and goes
hitless.
1910: Phillies pitchers Earl Moore and Bert Humphries combine to pitch a 3-0,
one-hitter over Boston.
1876: Boston beats the Phillies 6-5 in the first National League game ever played.

1991: After a 4-9 start, the Phillies fired manager Nick Leyva and replaced him with
Jim Fregosi, who guided them to a 74-75 record the rest of the way. Fregosi
took the Phillies to the World Series in 1993 and managed them through the 1996
season, when he was replaced by Terry Francona.
1966: The Phillies purchase INF-OF Harvey Kuenn from the Cubs.

1944: Phillies P Charley Schanz takes a 1-0 no-hitter into the 7th inning before

1895: The rebuilt grandstand at Philadelphia Park, which burned down on August

1947: The Phillies release C Rollie Hemsley. Hemsley played for the
Phillies in 1946-47, in a backup role.
1938: Phillies P Hal Kelleher gives up a modern National League record 12

1991: Lenny Dykstra and Darren Daulton are injured in an early-morning car
wreck on their way back from John Kruk's bachelor party. Both will spend time
on the disabled list and will play only 152 games between them in 1991.
1966: In an 8-7 win, the Phillies score 5 runs in the 11th inning to win after
the Pirates scored 4 in the top of the frame. The 9 runs set a modern day

winner, retires. Only Roberto Clemente and Willie Mays have won more Gold

1984: Steve Carlton lifts a grand slam off Fernando Valenzuela to lead the

1972: Philles OF Greg Luzinski slams a towering 500-foot home run off the
Liberty Bell in the center field seats in Veterans stadium for the Phillies
only run in an 8-1 loss to the Cubs.
1967: Philadelphia voters approve a $13 million bond issue to build a new
stadium. On the field, the Phillies tie a NL record with their 11th straight
errorless game, but they lose 4-3 to St. Louis.

1979: The wind is really blowing out at Wrigley as the Cubs and Phillies
join in a wild ten-inning slugfest won 23-22 by the Phillies. Dave Kingman has
three home runs and six RBI for the Cubs while teammate Bill Buckner has a
grand slam and seven RBI. Mike Schmidt's two home runs include the game-winner
in the tenth inning. The eleven home runs between the two teams ties a major
league record.
1975: Phillies P Gene Garber ties a major league record for relief pitchers by
beating Atlanta 9-5. It was Garber's third victory in three consecutive games.
1967: Phillies defenders record just one assist in a 7-1 victory over the Reds.
This ties the NL record for fewest assists in a 9-inning game. Jim Bunning is
the winning pitcher.
1963: Houston's Don Nottebart no-hits the Phillies. The final score was 4-1,
as the Phillies scored an unearned run in the fifth inning on Don Hoak's
sacrifice fly.
1901: The Philadelphia Common Pleas Court rejects the Phillies' suit against
Nap Lajoie, Chick Fraser, and Bill 1901 Bernhard. The decision is appealed to
the State Supreme Court, but the trio remains with the Athletics all season.
Lajoie will hit .422, while Fraser wins 22 and Bernhard 17 for the 4th-place
Athletics.

1964: Jim Bunning tosses a 4-0, one-hit shut-out over Houston. Jim Wynn got
a single in the 4th inning.
1964: The Phillies release 3B Don Hoak. He would give way to the new
Phillies 3B, one Richard Anthony Allen.
1929: Brooklyn and Philadelphia score a major league record 50 runs in
a doubleheader at the Baker Bowl. The Robins (Dodgers) win the opener
20-16 and the Phils take the second game 8-6.
May 19th
1970: Phillies P Chris Short pitches a 4-0 shut out at Pittsburgh to help the
Phillies snap a 10 game losing streak.
1954: The Phils apologize to 2B Granny Hamner for having him followed by Charles
Leland, a detective. Phils owner Robert Carpenter, suspecting that some players
were not ready physically and mentally, had hired Leland to follow them. Hamner
noticed Leland and reported him to the police, who promptly arrested the detective.
Carpenter's apology comes with the Phils tied for 2nd place, a game behind St. Louis.

inning, when the Phillies score 5 times for a 5-4 win over Houston.
1974: During a 12-0 win over the Astros, Phillies 3B Mike Schmidt hits a ball
off the public address speaker hanging from the Astrodome roof, 117 feet up
and 300 feet from the plate. Schmidt must settle for a titanic single.
1926: Phillies reserve 3B Russ Wrighthouse hits for the cycle in a 13-11 victory
over Pittsburgh.

1990: Lenny Dykstra's hitting streaks stops at 23 games, as he goes 0-for-8
in a doubleheader with Montreal. Dykstra's average drops from .407 to .392.
1987: Having traded for him last December, the Phillies deal Mike Easler back
to the Yankees for a pair of minor leaguers.
1985 - Von Hayes became the 21st player in major league history to hit two
home runs in an inning, connecting twice during a nine-run first inning,
powering the Phillies to a 26-7 victory over the New York Mets. The 26 runs

1940: Pitcher Hugh Mulcahy ends Phillies club record-equaling twelve-game losing

1942: Phils outfielder Dan Litwhiler completes his 151st errorless game of the
season in a game against the Dodgers. Litwhiler becomes the first OF to avoid
an error the entire season. He has 308 putouts and 9 assists on the year.
1950: Phils C Andy Seminick hurts his ankle in the first game of a doubleheader,
limiting his effectiveness. He will play the next day and all through the WS,
later to find out that he has a bone separation.
1964: Despite three home runs by outfielder Johnny Callison, Phillies lose to

1907: Phillies pitcher George McQuillan pitches two-hit victory against Cincinnati
and sets major league record with thirty-two consecutive scoreless innings at start

1915: Phillies pitcher Grover Alexander hurls 5-0, one-hit victory (Sherry Magee
single in fourth inning) at Boston to clinch Phillies first National League pennant.
Gavvy Cravath's three-run home run in the first inning was the big blow in Alexander's
thirty-first victory, his twelfth shutout and his major league record fourth one-hitter
of the season. Alexander walked leadoff batter Herbie Moran and two outs later right
fielder Cravath muffed Magee's fly ball for Phillies lone error. Only other base-runner
for Boston was Magee, who singled with one out in fourth inning.
1952: The Phils Robin Roberts wins his 28th game, the most in the league since 1935,
a 7-4 win over New York. It is Roberts's 30th complete game.

1911: Phillies owner Barney Dreyfuss proposes that each team in the WS be
required to turn over one-fourth of its share of the gate to the league, to be
divided among the other teams. Until now, 10 percent of the gross went to the
National Commission, 60 percent to the players, and the rest to the 2 pennant-
winning clubs. The NL will pass the resolution and send it to the AL. It marks
the beginning of changes that ultimately give players of the first 4 clubs a
percentage of the WS money.
1948: Pitchers Dutch Leonard and Monk Dubiel traded to Chicago Cub for pitcher
Hank Borowy and first baseman Eddie Waitkus.
1973: Darrell Brandon released.

2020: The Phillies acquire left-handed reliever Jose Alvarado from the Tampa Bay Rays
in a three team trade which also involved the Dodgers. The Phillies part with LHP
Garrett Cleavenger in the deal.
